Maryia Karneyenka, born 1981 in Homiel, Belarus, is a contemporary visual artist working with photography, collage, and mockumentary. Based in Warsaw, Poland, she is the part of Belarusian Photographic Platform FSh1 team.
A key milestone in her practice is the multidisciplinary project Rattus Sapiens, which has grown from her long-lasting fascination with rats. Emerging from both the author’s activism and her personal experience, the project challenges conventional human-animal relations. Karneyenka expands the photographic medium by integrating analog, digital, and 3D collages, together with sculptural objects. The project also features illustrations from her original sketches.
The project culminates in a book Rattus Sapiens published by TAMAKA, blending her visual language with texts by Tatsiana Zamirovskaya, a writer of Belarusian origin, currently based in New York.
